Staff News, News & Notes

The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture supports College of Charleston students in many ways, including serving as a site for experiential learning. This semester, we are glad to have three undergraduate and graduate scholars on board as interns. Please read below their reasons for interning at the Center. So when you come in, you may be helped by one of them.

Renee Atkins

Hello! My name is Renee Atkins. I am a History major and Communications minor. This is my junior year of college and I graduate in 2026! My career goal is to one day be an archivist or something in that general path. I am not sure where I want to go, but I thought this would be a great place to start. I have been interested in interning at the Avery Research Center since my freshman year of college when I came for a tour with my African American Studies class and knew from that day that I had to make my way back somehow.

Bre Jones

My name is Bre Jones. I am a Public History Graduate student in my 3rd semester. My career goal is to work in a museum or university archive. I wanted to intern at Avery to gain experience with archival material, and Avery also aligns with my research interest in slavery, emancipation, and abolition.

Allison Morris

My name is Allison Morris, and I am a senior at the College of Charleston. I will be graduating in May! I am pursuing a double major in History and English with a concentration in creative writing, and I am pursuing two minors in African American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies.

I am still not entirely sure what my career goal is post-graduation, but that’s part of why I am interning at Avery – to see if museum and archival work is right for me. Given my programs of study, Avery seemed an excellent fit for me. Not to mention how I have always been interested in museums and archives, so getting to work within such a space was exactly what I was looking for in an internship!

MUSEUM TOURS: We offer self-guided tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am-12pm and 2pm-3:30pm. Large groups limited 25 people or less per time slot.
