The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture will be closed to researchers from May 13th to 17th to allow staff to clean and organize the archival spaces and assist in leading the 2024 Carolina Lowcountry and Atlantic World (CLAW) conference. The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture is glad to support the Johns Island Field School participants. Thus, we will be closed to the public on May 23rd and 24th so that attendees can learn about archival processes, how to be researchers, and how to complete their research projects. The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture will be closed to the public on May 27th. On this Memorial Day, we remember individuals who lost their lives in military service. In 1865, the first Memorial Day celebration was held in Charleston, South Carolina, in Hampton Park, where formerly enslaved people celebrated Union Soldiers.
