The Phillis Wheatley Literary and Social Club Reading Room is open by appointment only Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.; 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

General Information for On-Site Research

  • All in-person research will be by appointment only. Walk-in appointments will not be permitted.
  • Researchers can make multiple-day appointments.
  • Due to the size of the reading room, one person is allowed per appointment slot. If you need more, please confer with staff in advance.
  • Access to an on-site appointment will only be granted after a consultation. This consultation can be done virtually via Zoom, by phone by calling the reading room at 843.953.7608, or by e-mail by filling out the Contact Us form and selecting “Request Material for On-site Visit” from the drop-down options.

Virtual Services

We welcome inquiries from all users, regardless of affiliation. Researchers can get in touch with Avery Research Center reference professionals via e-mail or arrange a virtual research consultation via Zoom with an archivist.

Researchers can also explore collections via our Archives Finding Aid SystemDiscovery Service (library catalog), the Lowcountry Digital Library, or through various Research Guides.

BUILDING: The Avery Research Center for African American History and Culture will be CLOSED on January 20, 2025. We will reopen on January 21st at 10 a.m.

MUSEUM TOURS: We offer self-guided tours Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10:30am-12pm and 2pm-3:30pm. Large groups limited 25 people or less per time slot.

ARCHIVES: Researchers must have a consultation BEFORE making a research appointment. Contact us in advance for further assistance.
